Preparing for Surgery
Your child has been scheduled for a surgical procedure with Pediatric Surgical Associates. For surgery to go smoothly, we would like to inform you of a few important items. Please read the following information carefully in anticipation of your child’s surgery.
Pre-Operative Exam
Your child will need to have a pre-operative exam (history and physical) done by your pediatrician or family doctor. This should be done within 30 days of surgery, unless otherwise instructed. We want to make sure your child is free of infections and physically healthy enough to undergo the procedure.
Pre-Operative Lab Work
If your child is having any surgery involving the kidneys, bladder, or urethra a preoperative urinalysis and urine culture are needed 7-10 days before surgery. Your surgery scheduler will notify you if this is needed and information about it will be included in the surgery paperwork from Pediatric Surgical Associates. 7-10 days is needed to allow time to receive results and begin treatment if an infection is identified. Surgery could be canceled if this is completed outside of this timeframe. Do not wait to have this done at the same time as the Covid test.
Most other surgeries we perform do not require any preoperative lab work, but if anything else is needed this will be stated in the surgery paperwork from Pediatric Surgical Associates.
Eating and Drinking Guidelines
Someone from the facility your child is scheduled at will be calling you a few days prior to surgery to clarify the check in time and the eating and drinking guidelines.
Please remember to carefully read the NPO (nothing by mouth) guidelines that you will receive. It is very important that your child have nothing to eat or drink before receiving anesthesia. If there is anything in the stomach, there is a chance your child could vomit and aspirate into the lungs. Surgery will be canceled if the NPO guidelines are not followed.
IMPORTANT:
If your child is on blood thinners (Coumadin, Aspirin, etc.) or anti-inflammatory medications you may need to discontinue them prior to surgery. Please check with your primary physician or prescribing provider.

List of Ambulatory Surgery Centers
Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) provide same-day surgical care. ASC facilities seek to optimize our patients’ experience through clinical quality, convenience, and cost savings. On average, our patients pay approximately 45 percent less than they would if they had the identical procedure performed at a hospital. These savings are reflected in patients’ co-pays and co-insurance.
Please note: Not all children are able to have their procedure at an ASC facility. To see if your child qualifies, please contact your surgeon’s office at 612-813-8000, option 2.

Billing and Insurance
We are more than happy to help you with an estimate of what your surgical costs may be. There are typically three charges for a procedure: Surgeon’s fee, Facility fee, and Anesthesiologist’s fee. Please be aware that medical cost of care estimates is not legally binding. Costs can and will change due to unforeseen complications and/or changes to the course of care that becomes necessary at the time of service. We also strongly encourage you to also speak directly with your health insurance carrier on matters of benefit coverage and to better understand your insurance policy provisions such as deductibles, coinsurance and maximum out of pocket amounts. We will take care of any prior authorizations if needed.
